Host Agents - Reduce Risk from Agency Identity Theft

Recently, agents have reported that fraudsters have stolen the identity of ARC/IATA agencies (recently Canadian agents) and signed up on a host's website pretending to be an accredited agency.

Most Independent Consultants (IC) are very responsible, honest and trustworthy individuals, but there have been cases of ICs committing fraud. In these cases, the criminal poses as an ARC/IATA agent using the agency's code number and address and a similar email address to that of the owner/employee of the approved agency. (e.g., If Mary Smith's real email address is, the criminal will establish and use an address such as

The host agency verifies the agency code number is assigned to the named ARC/IATA agency, with the same location, and then approves the new IC to use the online booking tool. The criminal then uses compromised credit cards, which will be rejected by the real cardholder, to book.

Here are some recommended best practices to help you verify the identity of an agency/IC when you are vetting them before they join your agency—as well as after they're approved:

  • Verify at least two business references.
  • Require proof of E&O Insurance.
  • Obtain the applicant's notarized picture ID.
  • Independently verify the agency/IC through internet searches, and use the information found to contact the agency/IC to ask if they applied to be an IC with your company.
  • Review agency's website to identify valid email domains and telephone numbers.
  • Monitor IC's ticketing after approval for same-day/next-day departures and international departures, especially from LOS, ACC, ABJ, BOG, LIM and GRU.
  • Determine if the cardholder and passenger are the same.

If you suspect a scheme, please contact ARC's fraud prevention team at 855-358-0393 or

ACTION REQUIRED: New Web Browser and Operating System Requirements for ARC Users

Data security is of the utmost importance to ARC. To that end, effective August 1, 2015, access to all of ARC's tools (e.g., My ARC, IAR, Agency Memo Manager, DRS, etc.) will be limited to users of ARC-approved web browsers and operating systems. Users of non-approved browsers and operating systems will not be supported after this date.

ARC is implementing this initiative because not all web browsers and operating systems offer the same level of security. Ensuring that the web browser, operating system and tools you use are up-to-date will not only help protect ARC's systems, but will also greatly help prevent your business from being exploited by cyber criminals.

If you are not using a browser and an operating system from the approved list below, you will need to upgrade as soon as possible, otherwise your ability to use ARC systems will cease on August 1, 2015.

Approved PC/Mac Operating Systems

  • Windows Vista SP2 or higher (includes Windows 7, 8 and 8.1)
  • OSX 10.8 or higher (includes v10.9 and 10.10)

Approved Web Browsers

  • Internet Explorer - Version 9 or higher
  • Safari - Version 6 or higher
  • Google Chrome - Version 40 or higher
  • Firefox - Version 34 or higher
  • Opera - Version 27 or higher

Approved Mobile Platforms - Operating Systems with Native (built in) Web Browsers

  • Android 5.0 or higher with native browser
  • iOS 8.1 or higher with native browser

Before upgrading your operating system, we strongly recommend that you consult with your IT support desk, or if you don't have one, we suggest you consult with an IT professional. Click here to learn the name of the web browser and operating system you are using.
