With the media frenzy over the Heartbleed security bug, many of you may be wondering: Has ARC been affected? Heartbleed may have affected nearly two-thirds of websites online, but it did not affect ARC.
Heartbleed is actually a mistake written into Open SSL (security standard encrypting communication between you and the servers behind many online services), which allows hackers to extract data from their databases. Fortunately, ARC does not use the SSL software that contains this vulnerability.
But, because of this, you will notice that several service providers are sending emails asking users to update their passwords. This is the perfect opportunity for phishing emails! Beware of phishing emails that entice you to click on a link and enter your username and password. Do not click the link and log in through an email.
If you believe you have received a phishing email pertaining to business, please forward the suspect email to firstname.lastname@example.org with the subject: Possible Phishing Email.
This is a reminder about the agent/CTD transaction fee that is assessed on a quarterly basis. In 2014, the quarterly fee is set at $0.017 per transaction. An agency reporting an aggregate of less than 1,000 transactions per quarter will not be assessed a transaction fee. The maximum number of transactions for which an agency can be charged in a quarter is 2.25 million transactions (per entity). A separate debit representing this fee will be drawn against your ARC designated bank account on or after April 24, 2014. Only one draft will be issued for consolidated drafting agents.

Did you know there are three options for the financial guarantee instrument, which is required of all fully accredited ARC agencies? A bond, irrevocable letter of credit and ARC Cash Security Deposit are all acceptable surety instruments. Bonds and letters of credit need to be renewed on an annual basis, but the cash deposit never needs to be renewed.
