IRS Adjustments to Air Travel Excise Taxes

Last Wednesday, the Internal Revenue Service announced inflation adjustments to the US Flight Segment Tax and the Alaska/Hawaii Ticket Tax.

Beginning January 1, 2011, the US Flight Segment Tax on the amount paid for each domestic segment of taxable air transportation remains the same at $3.70 per segment.

The US international departure tax on any amount paid (whether within or without the United States) for any air transportation beginning or ending in the United States (other than in Alaska or Hawaii) has been increased from $16.10 to $16.30.

For segments beginning or ending in Alaska or Hawaii, the tax, which applies only to departures, has increased from $8.10 to $8.20. The new rate applies to domestic segments beginning on or after January 1, 2011, for which payment is made on or after January 1, 2011. Taxes collected for travel that begins after March 31, 2011, may be subject to refund if the tax is not extended.

These taxes must be collected on all taxable amounts paid through March 31, 2011, even if the passenger's transportation begins after that date.

Congress may extend the tax in its current form or may revise it.
